Aims of the course:

We are delighted to welcome master potter Emily Myers to run our two-day throwing and faceting masterclass.

This course is aimed at students who can throw a basic cylinder but want to achieve taller forms.

Day one will concentrate  on wedging and repetition throwing of cylinders, beakers, and bottle forms.

Day two will be about working on leather-hard pots. Students will practice turning and faceting.

This is a small group, intensive making and refining course allowing for plenty of tutor attention.

N.B. At the end of the course it will be possible to take your work home as greenware (charged for by weight) or to leave a piece at Vessel Ceramics to be biscuit fired to be collected later.

ABOUT EMILY:

“Emily Myers is a consummate, careful thrower... her range of work quietly celebrates the possibilities of clay.” Emmanuel Cooper

Emily currently throws vessels on the wheel in both red stoneware and porcelain clay. These two very different clays, result in a broad range of work, but all with the starting point of the thrown pot. Some forms are painstakingly carved, faceted or inlaid. The accuracy of the carving is achieved purely by eye, a steady hand, and a great attention to detail.

A Crafts Council selected maker and member of the Craft Potters Association, she was featured in an article for Ceramic Review Magazine in the January/February 2021 edition.

Emily has demonstrated regularly at Art in Action and has exhibited solo at Beaux Arts in Bath and Contemporary Ceramics in London. Internationally, her work has been displayed in Tel Aviv, Hamburg, Paris and New York.

Approach to teaching
Emily’s approach to teaching is encouraging and relaxed. She tries to impart her skills without being prescriptive, and hopes that students will gain a sense of satisfaction in the creative process.
