We are thrilled that Ruthanne Tudball has accepted our invitation to run a two-day exploratory Masterclass.

Aims of the course:

This workshop will contain exercises which will stretch and challenge your approach to clay using alternative making methods other than throwing on the wheel. It will offer an opportunity to explore your imagination, inspiration and originality in your approach to form and decoration.

By the end of the course, you can expect to be more aware that a personal style cannot be achieved intentionally. Style is a means to an end and not an end in itself. The important thing is to have fascinations, preferences, nagging questions, enthusiasms and passions. Noticing your concerns and continually defining and refining them is what gives birth to a personal style.

This is a small group, intensive course allowing for plenty of tutor attention.

N.B. At the end of the course it will be possible to take your work home as greenware (charged for by weight) or to leave a piece at Vessel Ceramics to be biscuit fired to be collected later.

ABOUT RUTHANNE:

Ruthanne Tudball

Ruthanne is an Honorary Fellow of the Craft Potters Association of Great Britain, an elected member of the International Academy of Ceramics and a member of the Norfolk Contemporary Craft Society.

She was born in California and the mountains, sea and desert are innate inspiration for her work.

Having moved to England in 1968 she studied English Literature at Reading University & spent her spare time in a studio teaching herself to throw. She later studied at Goldsmith’s College where drawing (particularly life drawing) became and continues to be important to her -echoing through her clay work . After graduating with a Commendation, she wrote “Soda Glazing” published in 1995.

Since moving to the country Ruthanne has been able to combine wood and gas firings and more recently she’s been working without the wheel but also keeping the work soft and dynamic.

Teaching style:

The world of ceramics is wide and varied, and it is important to make it accessible and understandable to a wide public. I try to use clay with honesty and integrity and hope people respond with their hearts.
